Chapter Sixteen

Keile resisted the urge to yawn as she watched Rick navigate through the demonstration program she’d spent more time developing than she wanted to remember. The program was designed to help the client distribute future population and employment growth in a user designated area. Although she knew she’d done an outstanding job, she felt too numb to take any pride in her accomplishment. She was tired, and more than a little bit angry that the help Rick promised a week ago had never materialized. At some level she knew her anger was irrational, fueled by having to pass up dinner with Haydn last night. That didn’t stop her from being pissed.

“This is excellent work as always.” Rick looked up from his computer screen with a satisfied smile. “It’s good to know I can always count on you to help me look good. I certainly appreciate the hours you put into this.”

“Thanks, Rick.” She looked at him and remembered the moment she’d realized that the possibility of a bonus couldn’t make up for the time she’d lost out on with Haydn and Kyle.

At first she’d been shocked that such a thought would cross her mind. Then as she’d really looked at her situation, the future stretched out in a narrow road that led to work and more work.

Now that she had a taste of something different, she didn’t want to go back to being one-dimensional.

She took a deep breath and squared her shoulders. “You’re right about the hours. I could really use the help you were talking about getting for me last week. This project is growing exponentially every day.”

Rick leaned back in his big, leather chair and crossed his arms.

“I thought you thrived on the extra work.” His voice seemed deceptively mild.

Keile fought against the desire to look away from his penetrating gaze. “I’ve been doing this so long I feel burnt out.

I’d like to scale back to a fifty-hour week and have a life outside of work.” She smiled, willing him to understand.

“I see.” Rick tented his fingers under his chin and nodded. “I have to admit I’m a little disappointed, Keile. I thought you were a team player.”

“I’ll still be doing more than my fair share of the work, Rick.”

Keile hated how defensive she sounded, and at that moment she was angry at him for putting her in this position. “I’m just asking for someone else to take part of the load. You yourself commented on how the scope has been expanded.”

Rick glanced at his watch. “I have a meeting in a few minutes.

We’ll come back to this later. In the meantime, please start working on the tasks we outlined.”

“Certainly,” Keile said, giving no hint of the frustration mixed with anger she felt at Rick’s clear dismissal of her and her concerns. With a tight smile that barely moved her lips, she left quietly. The farther away from his office she got, the angrier she became. She wasn’t asking for much, and there were several of her co-workers who could step in and help out.
